Top Passport-Free Travel Destinations

If you're one of the many Americans who doesn't have a passport, that doesn’t mean you can’t travel to exotic places and other countries. As a U.S. citizen, there are many islands, territories, and even cruises that are U.S. passport/travel visa free. So, if you are looking for no passport needed vacations, look no further.

Islands You Can Visit Without a Passport

  1. Northern Mariana Islands

The Northern Mariana Islands are a self-governing commonwealth in association with the United States, which allows U.S. citizens to travel to and from without a passport. These 14 islands are located in the west Pacific Ocean and are home to multiple volcanic mountain peaks and uplifted coral reefs. These islands are surrounded by beautiful blue ocean and multiple tropical forests, giving travelers an amazing exotic experience.

  2. Guam

Just south of the Northen Mariana Islands, lies the island of Guam. A U.S. territory, Guam, similar to the Northern Mariana Islands, is home to multiple volcanic hills on the south side of the island, while the north is a limestone plateau. Due to Guam’s consistent tropical climate, it is home to many types of plants such as palm trees, ferns, and other tropical species.

  3. Puerto Rico

A U.S. territory, Puerto Rico is home to El Yunque rainforest and many beautiful beaches. Often called The Island of Enchantment, Puerto Rico is especially convenient for U.S. residents because the island uses the U.S. dollar, so there is no need to exchange currency before visiting. The island holds a rich history, and Puerto Ricans pride themselves on their warm, vibrant culture - which you'll experience through murals, art museums, street festivals, and more.

  4. U.S. Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are made up of three separate islands: St. John Island, St. Croix Island, and St. Thomas Island. Each of the islands is special in its own way. St. Thomas is one of the Caribbean’s major sailing centers, and St. John is two-thirds national park, which has amazing hiking trails for those who love to immerse themselves in nature. St. Croix is known for its beautiful beaches on the west side of the island and boasts several local shops and boutiques.

Countries You Can Visit Without a Passport

  1. Canada

U.S. citizens may be able to enter Canada with a NEXUS card to prove U.S. nationality. NEXUS members can enter Canada via 9 international airports, 20 land border crossings, and more than 400 marine reporting centers. To receive a NEXUS card, you have to complete an application, pay a $120 USD application fee, and complete an in-person interview with customs/border officers from Canada and the U.S. It might be challenging for some travelers to get to an interview location, so a passport may be a better option. Many travelers visit vibrant cities such as Vancouver, Toronto, and Quebec City. Nature enthusiasts tend to visit Canada’s natural wonders like Niagara Falls, Gros Morne National Park, and the Northern Lights.

Cruises That Don’t Require a Passport

Another option for passport-less travelers is closed-loop cruises, where sailing starts and ends at the same U.S. port. In most cases, you just need to show proof of U.S. citizenship (e.g., valid driver's license or birth certificate).

Below are some international destinations outside the U.S. where travelers can explore new places without a passport. Travelers on closed-loop cruises are able to get off the ship at each port without a passport, in most cases.

Some destinations you can visit via a closed-loop cruise are:

  1. The Bahamas
  2. Bermuda
  3. Canada
  4. The Caribbean
  5. Mexico
