Hurricane Dorian

On August 24th, 2019 Tropical Storm Dorian officially formed in the Atlantic Ocean and has since grown to hurricane strength. While travel suppliers and airlines are trying to reroute flights, some delays and cancellations are inevitable. International Medical Group (IMG) understands that insureds with plans to travel to this area will have questions about their coverage, and we encourage them to call us with any questions.

The following are some general guidelines and examples regarding the various coverages that may be available):

Trip Delay – Additional meal, local transportation and accommodation expenses may be reimbursed up to the amount provided by the plan if you have left home and travel is delayed 6 hours or more due to common carrier (such as airplane) delays or cancellations. Additional covered reasons may apply. The dollar amount of coverage will be based on the plan you selected. Please refer to your plan documents for complete details.

Missed Connection – This benefit can reimburse unused land and water arrangements and additional transportation to catch up to the trip if you miss your cruise or tour departure because you are delayed for three hours or more by a covered reason. Covered reasons can include a three hour delay of a common carrier (such as an airplane), or if the storm itself causes you a three hour or more delay or prevents you from getting to your point of departure for three hours or more. The dollar amount of coverage for Missed Connection will vary depending on the plan you purchased. For more details, please review your plan documents.

Trip Interruption – IMG plans offer Trip Interruption coverage for your travel arrangements if they are disrupted and you must join your trip late, leave early, or return later than originally scheduled due to a covered reason. Depending on the IMG plan, covered reasons to interrupt the trip can include: a flight delay of 12 hours or more due to weather; home or accommodations at your destination made uninhabitable because of the storm. There may also be additional covered reasons for Trip Interruption that Dorian may trigger. Trip Interruption coverage is based on the amount of the trip cost you insured on the plan. Trip Cancellation – IMG plans can cover cancellation penalties if you are not able to travel because Dorian causes a complete cessation of services for at least 12 hours of the common carrier (such as an airplane) on which you are scheduled to travel. Based on the plan selected, IMG can cover you if your home or destination is rendered uninhabitable due to the storm or there is a Hurricane warning from NOAA and you cancel within 36 hours of departure. You can also be covered for cancellation if a mandatory evacuation is ordered by local government authorities at your trip destination (or official public evacuation notices or recommendations without a mandatory evacuation order issued) due to Dorian. There may also be additional covered reasons for Trip Cancellation that Dorian may trigger. The dollar amount of coverage is determined by the amount of trip cost you insured on the plan.
